"After" you go home, you may have some questions about what to expect and what is "normal" following heart surgery. It is our intent to address these questions with the following information. What Happens after my Chest Incision? You should refrain from any heavy lifting (over 10 pounds) for approximately 8 weeks. How should I care for a Leg Incision? Great care to minimize this swelling should be taken as the swelling can interfere with proper wound healing. What Happens to my Appetite & Should I watch my Activity? Poor appetite is a common complaint following heart surgery. Good nutrition following surgery is imperative for adequate wound healing. Exercise is not restricted with the exception of heavy lifting. What about Driving & Work? Because of the remaining soreness following surgery, we ask that you refrain from driving for 2-4 weeks after your surgery. Returning to work is based on the patient's job, age, and overall medical condition.
